Benny

Erlwanger's main point was to show that students can progress through the mathematical IPI program without a complete and adequate understanding of previous work. Benny, a 12 year old boy, who is involved in the IPI program was the subject of study for this paper. Benny's scores on homework and tests were quite high. Then during the interview, Benny couldn't compute simple mathematical equations correctly; such as converting between fractions and decimals. Benny thought he understood the concepts when in fact he did not.
After reading Erlwanger's paper, it got me thinking about when i become a teacher. If Benny was one of the highest scoring kids in the IPI program in his class and he had very little to no understanding of the concepts of mathematics, then when i am a teacher i need to be aware that even the students with the highest scores in my class may not have a complete understanding of the material.

  1. I like how you wrote the second paragraph with specific application to you as a teacher and not just to all teachers overall.
I believe a strong topic sentence to begin your second paragraph would add greater strength to the ideas you are arguing.

  2. I agree with Jenepher's comment about how it was nice that you applied it to your future. I think that the majority of us just looked at this as an assignment we needed to get done as opposed to something that we should think about when we start teaching. One thing that I would have done to make this stronger would have been to develop the concept a bit more. Give more detail into how I can apply this to teachin.

  3. I really like how you applied it to you. You are already having ideas on how to become a good teacher, which is really good. Something to help support your thesis statement, would be to go a little more into the idea. You have a really good start and I would try to go a little deeper. Good job :)

  4. You did a nice job being clear and concise about the main point.

I would provide more evidence of why Benny was able to progress even though he didn't understand. What specific things contributed to this?
